Musial began his professional music studies in BUFFALO at age 7 with the amazing teacher Janie Liskiewicz. She and the “powers to be” around him “tricked him”, to begin his professional career as a full-time church pipe organist at the age of ten (it was the best thing for him”). He was featured on the “picture page” of the Buffalo news at age 11 for building a wooden “pushcart”! He designed on his own at age 12, and then built with using his dad’s power tools (while he was at work), along with his friends, a 2-story “clubhouse" with glass windows, a screened-in patio, on stilts with electricity! He started motocross dirtbike racing when his family moved to Orchard Park at age 13 He became the full-time paid organist at a church down the street. At age 13 he learned to ride a minibike and went on to learn shifting gears and rode 10,000 miles on dirt bikes! At 14 he earned an FCC Radio License "WB2ALD". At 15, he worked a part-time job at an electronics circuit board shop! At the same time, he rebuilt the engine and re-painted an 8-cylinder “clunker” his parents gave him. Also at 15, David started exploring abstract nature scene photography, with snow images as his favorite. At 16, he earned his driver's license and used his liturgical music income to purchase a used “Minimoog” synthesizer in East Aurora, NY (when the music technology legend “Bob Moog” lived there.) He took private keyboard lessons with the legendary blind musician “Carlos Annibale.” Musial joined a rock band ad was off to be a “rock star”... so he thought! David made his first short movie with 8mm film at 17, shooting through multi-colored plastic tubes. He scored the movie with his Moog synthesizer. David did NOT get involved with any music events in his high school, (he felt he was too busy with music outside of school), but the upset music director made him play the organ at Kleinhans Music Hall for his High School Graduation.
Due to his “rock star” passion inspired by “YES”, “Emerson Lake & Palmer” (he eventually met “Jon Anderson” of YES & Keith Emerson), and other rock & classic progressive rock groups like Genesis, STYX, Aerosmith, Deep Purple, Kansas and especially Starcastle, Musial did NOT plan on college, BUT, Erie Community College “knocked on his door” and he started his career as an Audio & Video Electronics Engineer turn maestro producer! In 1979 he switched to the University of Buffalo and produced his 1st album in the really cool Electronic Music studio on the “Monster Moog” synthesizer for the Saint John Vianney Folk Group. It was led by his dear friend and mentor Paul Petrocy… who nearly de-friended him. Because it sounded like STAR WARS, not like how the sounded on Sunday Morning! Musial fixed it, and they are still good friends today. Musial went on to produce well over 100 albums! He went on to finish an associate's degree in TV Production at Erie Community College South. Musial met AMAZING singers and went on to produce a variety of songs, albums, and music videos with Michelle Marchili, Jim Rebholz, Darlene Edwards, Ann Gardijan, Martin Barret, and McHarve, and many more!
David interned at the beautiful Select Sound Studios. He won an award for a student project held at the State University at Binghamton. Musial went on to Fredonia State University, where he worked hard to be accepted into the very exclusive “Tonmeister” program. There were only 3 universities in America at the time where you could earn a Bachelor’s degree in Record Producing. This program was made by his mentor Vince Morette when Musial was in his teen years, and now it is headed by the incredible award-winning Prof David Moulton, creator of the “Golden Ears” training program. Musial interned at a TV facility where he was the audio director for the Buffalo Bills Football and Buffalo Sabres Hocket Cable TV Shows. He graduated with a 4.0 in his major. His 1st job the day after was to be the audio director for a national TV broadcast of Rev. Schuler of the Crystal Cathedral at a live event in Washington DC.
Soon after, Musial was hired by the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo to be presented with the daunting yet exciting challenge to design and oversee the construction of the Daybreak TV and Radio Productions Center, where he perfected his skills as a Technical Director turn Producer! He designed the opening music video for the 1987 “Gabriel Awards” (which was like the Academy Awards/Oscars for the Catholic Church in America.) He also designed audio logos for the Catholic Telecommunications Network Of America: CTNA. He composed original music for a multitude of TV shows. Music performed on Synthesizers with the Buffalo Phlharmonic Orchestra, which was filmed for the national TV Show "Real to Reel". He assisted in the making of a movie, “NEVER TOO LATE” where he also scored the soundtrack. David did a great deal of creative graphic design for TV here as well.
Concurrently in his private time, he used the “Trackmaster Recording Studio” across from his apartment to work on the sound for Kodak TV commercials and more (when members of the “Goo Goo Dolls pop band were interning there.) Musial produced the jingle for the first Buffalo Subway radio commercial at Mark Record Studios, and it aired on most radio stations for years. David was assigned the intense responsibility to be the recording engineer AND the TV Technical Camera Director for a live concert with the great legendary Jazz Artist Dave Brubeck, a 100+ voice community choir, and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra in the Bishop’s Cathedral. While balancing the audio levels with one hand, over headphone intercom, he directed the camera shots and did the camera switching live to tape with the other hand, in a production van parked outside the cathedral which he designed! The documentary he co-produced wit Claire Rung aired on the CBS National TV Show "Sunday Morning".
About this time in 1984, Musial was mysteriously introduced to the legendary Bob Armstrong. Bob asked Musial what he wished to do with his musical direction. David replied (not knowing why the question was asked) that he dreamed of making music for cartoons and maybe movies someday. He listened to his instrumental demo tape made with synthesizers and did not comment. Instead, he walked him into a room lined with gold & platinum records: Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Eydie Gorme, Living Voices, etc. He was the original conductor of the NBC Radio Orchestra, a king of orchestration in NYC who retired back to his home in Grand Island near Buffalo. He offered to teach David privately about Jazz Piano stylings, theory, and general music business 3 nights a week, at no fee. He never had a student. The intro was by a priest who performed Bob’s wedding 50 years prior and recently his wife’s funeral!
Musial was ten approached by PBS TV in Buffalo to score original music for a nutrition show titled “Food Sense.” It was meant to be a cartoon for kids but evolved into a real actor drama. David completed the venture; Bob liked it, and then suddenly Musal is sent off to the finest conservatory in America for music, if not the world: The Juilliard School of Music, all expenses paid for a Doctorate in Composition!!! Concurrently he is featured in the art magazine in the Buffalo News called THE GUSTO! This is all surreal to Musial, born to kind, loving farmer/factory worker parents who had to drop out of high school to provide labor for their families! David moves to the Theater District in Midtown Manhattan to a brand new apartment in a hi-rise. (More here)
